Global Issues Project

The topic that I chose for my Global Issue Project was US tariffs and how they affect other countries. I made a collage by gluing images onto a piece of cardboard. I portrayed topics in my collage that include consumerism, capitalism, and how supply and demand work with these tariffs in place. I chose this topic because living in the US buying things from outside the country like Legos (sets and parts) the tariffs make it much more difficult and expensive for me to do so, and I wanted to explore why.

Artist's Statement: The Fragile Throne

The US tariffs on other countries are affecting everyone. Consumers in the countries being affected are finding the goods that are being put under these tariffs to be cheaper for them, because there is an excess of supply. This is because these countries do not want to do business with the US so they are cutting off trade. However, due to this, the people who work in these trades are being let go, with many jobs being lost, and these workers find themselves crushed. While the consumers find it to be cheap now to purchase goods, they will not be cheap long term, and job loss and less attention to the trades being affected means less is produced, so once the excess supply is gone, the demand will shoot up without enough jobs, funds, or factories to produce enough, meaning prices will soar as well, leaving the economies of the affected countries burnt. This is what the United States represents with these tariffs, destruction and greed, and this is not the American idea portrayed by our flag.
